Meeting Tony Waddell, Technical Sales Account Manager

As part of our Meet the Team series, we chat to Tony Waddell and learn more about his role with us and what he enjoys doing when not busy working on the CAD table, listening and working with customers and driving innovation at the Reedbut Group.

Tell us a bit about your background and life before Reedbut

Life before Reedbut started straight out of school. I began my career at Reedbut at the young age of 18 and have never looked back.

I worked part-time at Matalan from 16 to 18, operating in the Jeans section of the store. I still fold my jeans the same way I learned then to this day!

What is it that interests you about working in the corrugated board industry?

What is there not to love? Corrugated is an excellent solution for packing a product with its fully recyclable capacity. Taking a customer’s idea, designing a bespoke package and turning it into a reality is a rewarding experience. Seeing the customers’ reaction to a box that I have created and then nurturing the relationship with the customer is something I continue to enjoy daily.

What do you see as the biggest challenges of working in this industry?

Over the last two years, with demand outweighing supply, the main challenge has been to ensure secured supply for our customers. eCommerce packaging has taken off, and this sector continues to expand exponentially.

What is a typical day like for you at Reedbut? What does your job involve?

Every day is different, working with a diverse range of customers with requirements from eCommerce to transit packaging. As part of Reedbut Group Technical Sales Team, we process pre-orders. This can involve design concept, sample making using our CAD table, ordering all the origination required and providing the technical support to our production team and our customers.

What is the Reedbut Group’s response to tackling the global challenges when designing packaging and working with clients?

Over our three manufacturing sites, we have reduced our heating energy by reusing the warm air the machines produce to heat our factories. Our FSC® certification allows us to identify, purchase and use wood, paper, and other forest products made with materials from well-managed forests and sustainable sources.

When you aren’t at work, what do you enjoy doing?

Family time is important to me, and I endeavour to make every second count. I enjoy watching my two children grow up and develop their unique personalities. We spend a lot of time holidaying in Westward Ho! North Devon. My parents moved there in 2014, and it’s good to have a place on tap to enjoy.

Kickboxing / Thai boxing are a big interest of mine. I started kickboxing from the age of 12 to eventually achieving my second-degree black belt at 24. I have only competed in a few events in my younger years and took up martial arts as a confidence booster.

I have a love for all kinds of motorsport, with the MotoGP my main passion. The racing is full-on and exciting; even my wife enjoys watching it (sometimes!).
